Key Roles

This position is responsible for performing all duties necessary to ensure proper and efficient operation of all instrumentation, hydraulic systems, automatic control systems, and mechanical equipment associated with combustion turbines.

Key Responsibilities

Combustion Turbine Technician

  • Performs general facility maintenance duties.
  • Inspects and/or repair pumps.
  • Rebuilds valves.
  • Monitors, operates, and controls combustion turbines and auxiliary equipment, and takes appropriate action to maintain normal equipment and system operation.
  • Installs, calibrates, and tests various instruments such as pressure temperature, flow, position, and level transmitters, pressure gauges, data recorders, microprocessors, chemical analysis meters, and alarm systems.
  • Maintains automatic controls for combustion control, safeguard systems, data acquisition, turbine control systems, water treatment systems, and communication systems.
  • Performs hardware and software modifications and installs, monitors, and maintains programmable control systems.
  • Performs complicated rigging.
  • Operates overhead crane.
  • Operates a water treatment and demineralizer plant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Combustion Turbine Technician Level 1

  • Responds to plant alarms including screens and local.
  • Implements emergency action plans.
  • Navigates control panel screens (BOP Overview, CT Unit).
  • Monitors and records equipment parameters locally and on control panel including temperatures, levels, pressure, and kwh.
  • Implement fire suppression systems including CO2 and Plant.
  • Opens and closes valves locally and from control panel.
  • Locks and unlocks equipment from control panel.
  • Monitors equipment status locally and from control screens including fan and pump motors, breakers, and valves (Checks oil, vibration, and temperature).
  • Operate printers (select printer and change paper).
  • Uses a walkie talkie.
  • Operates emergency stops.
  • Reports unusual events to proper personnel.
  • Understands operation of turbines and support systems.
  • Ensures proper operation of enclosure ventilation.
  • Performs a walkdown inspection for gas turbines and BOP using the walkdown checklist.
  • Inspects gas turbine and BOP equipment for vibration, noise, temperature, and leaks during operation and document problems.
  • Records hourly readings on appropriate logs.
  • Reports megawatt total to Dispatch Center.
  • Monitors and records fluid levels including CT lube oil block and BOP from DCS (fuel oil and NOx Water).
  • Identifies unusual conditions and operates enclosure ventilation.
  • Starts gas heater for GE unit.
  • Selects fuel for turbine operation.
  • Stops gas turbine.
  • Performs hourly unit walkdown when on rotor barring.
  • Resets DART II gas recorder.
  • Sets up the gas yard for operation prior to start-up.
  • Starts gas turbine.
  • Shuts down gas yard after turbine shut down.
  • Starts gas compressor for LMS100.
  • Monitors fuel oil containment berm.
  • Checks compressor oil levels.
  • Monitors air dryer operation.
  • Checks differential pressure on instrument air filters.
  • Takes air dryer readings including pressure and temperature.
  • Rotates air compressors.
  • Starts and stops instrument air compressors.
  • Checks for proper operation of chemical pumps in water plant.
  • Monitors hourly during operation for abnormal conditions.
  • Shuts down DM Plant.
  • Identifies and responds to equipment alarms.
  • Identifies and responds to problems in plant operation.
  • Starts and stops river water pumps.
  • Monitors raw water entering clarifier.
  • Starts water plant and checks for proper operation.
  • Shuts down water plant.
  • Checks general service transformer oil levels and alarms.
  • Checks main transformer oil levels and alarms.
  • Checks unit auxiliary transformers.
  • Communicates with Dispatcher.
  • Racks in and racks out 480v and 4160v circuit breakers under supervision.
  • Opens and closes switches and breakers both locally and from control panel.
  • Monitors transformer containment pits.
  • Monitors status of Blackstart equipment.
  • Performs daily PM to Blackstart diesels and auxiliary equipment.
  • Starts Blackstart diesels.
  • Stops Blackstart diesels.
  • Performs a Blackstart from dead switchyard condition.
  • Locates circuit breakers.
  • Racks out breaker.
  • Removes breaker from cubicle.
  • Control Board Relays and Switches: Re lamps indicating lights.
  • Tags cables.
  • Fabricates low voltage splices.
  • Terminates cable.
  • Installs temporary cable.
  • Pulls cable.
  • Replaces cable.
  • Inspects cable for damage.
  • Cuts cable.
  • Repairs cable.
  • Prepares shrink tube terminations.
  • Meggers cable.
  • Locates cable faults.
  • Checks portable welders.
  • Checks welding machines.
  • Follows safety procedures for oil spills.
  • Replaces rubber gloves.
  • Uses high voltage rubber gloves.
  • Installs grounding.
  • Checks and adds electrolyte into battery cells.
  • Checks battery connections.
  • Greases battery terminals.
  • Inspects for abnormal conditions.
  • Performs hydrometer reading.
  • Performs voltage checks.
  • Replaces batteries.
  • Troubleshoots plant battery charges.
  • Conducts annual internal impedance testing.
  • Cleans and inspects contactors.
  • Operates contactors.
  • Repairs/replaces contactors.
  • Replaces contacts in contactors.
  • Tests contactors.
  • Inspects heat tracing.
  • Repairs/replaces heat tracing.
  • Inspects emergency lighting.
  • Repairs/replaces emergency lighting.
  • Cleans lighting components.
  • Installs electrical outlets.
  • Installs new light fixtures.
  • Installs new lighting systems.
  • Repairs light fixtures.
  • Replaces fluorescent lamps.
  • Replaces incandescent lamps.
  • Replaces mercury vapor lamps.
  • Isolates valves.
  • Requests electrical clearance/hold tags (motor operated valve).
  • Changes pump bearing lubrication.
  • Inspects lube oil pumps.
  • Inspects and replace lube oil pump fittings.
  • Fills out lubrication sheets (log book).
  • Lubricates fans.
  • Lubricates gears.
  • Lubricates mobile equipment.
  • Lubricate motors and gear boxes
  • Lubricate pump bearings and grease fittings
  • Lubricate valves
  • Maintains lubrication inventories.
  • Changes filters.
  • Maintains oil levels.
  • Collects fuel oil samples.
  • Maintains fuel oil tanks.
  • Offloads fuel oil.
  • Inspects fuel oil filters.
  • Performs necessary maintenance during combustion inspections under the guidance of supervision.
  • Changes belts on equipment.
  • Fabricates and run general wiring.
  • Repairs general wiring.
  • Fabricates and run tubing.
  • Maintains equipment logs.
  • Maintains glycol cooling system components.
  • Performs basic rosin core and silver soldering.
  • Repairs air and gas leaks in pneumatic instrumentation and controls.
  • Repairs hydraulic fluid leaks in hydraulic instrumentation and controls.
  • Performs diesel fire pump PMs.
  • Requests clearance/holdtags.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Requirements

Education and Certifications / Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s or technical degree in industrial maintenance including mechanical, electronics, electricity, and control systems preferred.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of related experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of pumps and motors, valve operation, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Working knowledge of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, millivoltmeters, frequency generators, digital and analog voltmeters, manometers, D.C. and A.C. power generators, etc.
  • Knowledge of water treatment facilities highly desirable.
  • Must be able to read and understand schematic drawings, technical manuals, system logic, and blueprints for digital control systems.
  • Training or demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and repair of distributed control systems with emphasis on GE Mark V and/or ABB Mod 300 preferred.
  • Must be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work alone.

Working Conditions

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record and must live within one and a half (1.5) hours of the plant.
  • Must work a 12-hourrotating shift, if needed; on-call position; nonscheduled overtime is a normal part of job.
  • Work environment conditions include: noise, heat, gas emissions, chemical vapors, dust, high-pressure lines, etc.
  • Occasional lifting up to fifty (50) pounds; regular climbing and working at heights on stairs and ladders.
  • Must pass a physical ability and aptitude test; must follow procedures for wearing a respirator and other protective equipment.
