Description

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

General Duties:

Prepare medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Measure, mix, count, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders.

Specific Duties:

  • Receive prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.
  • Enter prescription information into computer databases.
  • Establish or maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients.
  • Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications in current inventory, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items, or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
  • Operate cash register to accept payment from customers.
  • Price and file prescriptions that have been filled.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions.
  • Order, label, and count stock of medications, chemicals, or supplies and enter inventory data into computer.
  • Clean and help maintain equipment or work areas and sterilize glassware, according to prescribed methods.
  • Prepare and process medical insurance claim forms and records.
  • Price stock and mark items for sale.
  • Maintain a sanitary work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technicians may do the following additional tasks:
    • Initiate or receive a telephonic communication from a practitioner or practitioner's agent concerning refill authorization, after the certified pharmacy technician clearly identifies himself or herself as a certified pharmacy technician.
    • If a practitioner or practitioner's agent communicates information that does not relate to the refill authorization:
      • A technician shall immediately inform the pharmacist.
      • The pharmacist shall receive the communication.
    • A pharmacy technician may administer a vaccine under the general supervision of a pharmacist to an individual if the pharmacy technician:
      • Completes a minimum of two (2) hours of immunization-related continuing education accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) per each state registration period;
      • Completes, or has completed, a practical training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) that includes hands-on injection technique and the recognition and treatment of emergency reactions to vaccines; and
      • Possesses a current certificate in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Position Requirements

Physical Requirements:

The primary portion of work is in a well-lit, ventilated, and air-conditioned facility. It may require prolonged, extensive sitting/standing. Position may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and/or use of tactile information. The individual must be able to express ideas or exchange thoughts by means of talking, hearing, reading, and/or writing. The individual should have motor coordination, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, eye-hand-foot coordination. This position may include transporting objects, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

High school diploma required

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred
