The Power Plant at Morehead State University is accepting applications for a full-time position as a Heat & Water Plant Operator Trainee. The anticipated start date is April 16, 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibility of the Heating and Water Plant Operator Trainee is the production of steam and bacteriologically free and potable water for human consumption in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Incumbent also monitors equipment, performs maintenance and repair in the plant and field and carries out other routine plumbing and electrical tasks.

REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with at least one year of mechanical experience. Must achieve a Water Treatment Plant Operator Class III A Certification within forty-two (42) months from date of employment according to the following schedule: First fifteen months – achieve Class IA Certification; within 30 months -achieve Class IIA Certification; and within 42 months – achieve Class IIIA Certification. Valid Kentucky driver’s license and good physical condition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Additional education in science and math, additional mechanical and welding experience and heavy equipment operation.

Organizational Relationships
The Heating and Water Plant Operator Trainee reports to the Operations Coordinator and/or a designated Class IIIA Certified Water Plant Operator. This position interacts with other Facilities Management employees.
Physical Requirements
Working Conditions
Forty hour work week will be swing shift. Necessary to work on holidays when scheduled or during emergencies. Overtime may be required. Operators work with hazardous and dangerous chemicals, gases, high pressure steam, high noise levels, and dusty conditions. Works in hot, humid, and tight places. Operators work around high voltage switch gears and work in confined spaces.
