The Craft Academy at Morehead State University is accepting applications for a Graduate Assistant – Residence Counselor. The anticipated start date is January 6, 2024.

Morehead State University is located in Morehead, KY, a designated Kentucky Trail Town, nestled in Daniel Boone National Forest, in close proximity to Cave Run Lake. This location provides opportunities for a wide range of outdoor recreation activities. Additionally, Morehead State University is relatively close to a number of larger cities including Lexington, KY, Louisville, KY, and Cincinnati, OH. RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists the Assistant Director of Residence Life in the planning, leading and supervising activities that includes travel with the students to organized social activities. Works with the Assistant Director of Residence Life to secure paperwork needed for travel waivers, lunches and snacks when traveling to events. Connects students to counseling and emergency services. In special instances, RC’s may transport students to health services. Serves as a role model for Craft Academy students in all areas of personal, relational, and academic life. Monitors and documents: student curfews, check-in/check-out procedures, room cleanliness checks and required study time checks. Assists in staffing the front desk during assigned shifts as needed. Serves as a student advisor for clubs/activities when applicable. Assists with academic support services to maximize student success.

REQUIREMENTS: Must be admitted to a graduate degree program. Must be enrolled in and maintain at least nine graduate hours per semester. Must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week. Must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA each semester. Must have a valid driver’s license. The Residence Counselor (Graduate Assistant) is required to reside in a single-gender residential wing in Craft Tower. This benefit provides housing and all utilities at no cost. Craft-specific GAs are eligible to work for the program as long as performance evaluation expectations are met and for 2 years or until program completion (whichever comes first). To be considered for another GA position after program completion, the GA must be admitted to a second-degree program and reapply for the RC Position and be considered equally with other applicants.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working in residential life at the secondary or post-secondary level either as a hall director, residential assistant, or similar position preferred. Experience working with gifted youth or pursuing advanced studies in gifted education and or STEM fields is preferred. Teaching experience and or experience working with high school youth is preferred.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Residence Life and the Director of the Craft Academy. It is vital that the Residence Counselor (Graduate Assistant) work closely with MSU’s Director of Housing and other university residence counselors. This person must demonstrate confidentiality and accuracy when working with students and maintaining and administering student records while adhering to the Handbook policies and procedures.

The work environment will require RC’s to participate in Craft Academy Leadership Team meetings, developing, supervising and leading evening and weekend social, recreational and academic support activities. Some evenings and weekend work will be required. GA’s will work 20 hours per week. One weekend a month will be designated a “closed weekend”. Craft Academy students are required to go home on closed weekends. RC’s will not be required to work during closed weekends.
