The Department of Housing & Residential Education at Morehead State University is accepting applications for a full-time position as an Area Coordinator. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2025.
Morehead State University is located in Morehead, KY, a designated Kentucky Trail Town, nestled in Daniel Boone National Forest, in close proximity to Cave Run Lake. This location provides opportunities for a wide range of outdoor recreation activities. Additionally, Morehead State University is relatively close to a number of larger cities including Lexington, KY, Louisville, KY, and Cincinnati, OH. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Area Coordinator position at Morehead State University (MSU) is a full-time (12 month), live-in professional position which provides a good groundwork for future careers in higher education administration. Area Coordinators play a vital role in implementing MSU’s housing and residence education program, helping students flourish academically, personally and socially, as well as assisting in retention efforts by making connections between students and Morehead State University. Area Coordinators directly supervise 10-15 undergraduate resident assistants and are supervised by an Assistant Director. This position requires enthusiasm, commitment to excellent customer service, commitment to create welcoming and inclusive living-learning environments, and the desire to better oneself as well as the University community by continuing to challenge self and others.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 25% Staff Supervision: The Area Coordinator will supervise 15-23 Resident Advisors in a supervision area of 700-800 beds. The Area Coordinators meet with student staff regularly, both individually and as a team, to discuss community concerns and monitor individual and team progress. Area Coordinators assist in team development, training, and retention efforts for their direct reports and the overall Resident Advisor staff.
25% Community Development: The Area Coordinator will sustain personal contact with residents through regularly scheduled office hours, attendance at programs, and daily presence in their assigned community. The Area Coordinator will direct the RA staff in creating a safe and friendly community that is inclusive and promotes student development and personal growth. This will be achieved through the development of programs and events that best fit the needs of their unique community and ensuring the equitable application of policy enforcement. Area Coordinators will communicate, clarify, and enforce policy alongside the building team in addition to referring policy violations through appropriate venues for university follow up. The Area Coordinator will follow up on security or maintenance issues in their assigned areas.
15% Crisis Management: The Area Coordinator participates in the campus-wide crisis response duty rotation year-round and practices good judgement when responding to crisis situations. The Area Coordinator provides intervention and response to situations on campus, in accordance with policy and training. The Area Coordinator develops and maintains Resident Advisor staff evening and weekend duty rotation. The Area Coordinator refers students in crisis to appropriate office or department and follows up, as needed. The Area Coordinator completes report paperwork professionally and in a timely fashion. The Area Coordinator will also review student conduct reports submitted by staff and responds to parent concerns with discretion.
20% Administrative: The Area Coordinator will submit administrative reports and forms within deadlines provided and will maintain accurate occupancy reports and room change requests and approvals within their assigned area. The Area Coordinator will maintain regular communication with the central Office of Housing and Residence Education and proactively respond to maintenance and custodial concerns, following up as needed. The Area Coordinator will make appropriate purchases within established guidelines for programming and building needs.
10% Professional Development: The Area Coordinator participates in training, professional development, one on one, and team meetings. Area Coordinator participation in regional, state, and national organizations is expected and encouraged. Area Coordinators will sit on departmental, divisional, and university committees at the discretion of the Director of Housing and Residence Education.
5% Other Duties As Assigned
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree required plus student housing and residence life experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree preferred.

Organizational Relationships
The Area Coordinator reports to an Assistant Director for Student Housing and works collaboratively with other members of the department, including the other Assistant Directors and the Director. The Area Coordinator interacts with University Police, Facilities Management, Enrollment Services, Health and Counseling Services, and First Year Programs and Academic Services.

Professional live-in staff member. Typical office/indoor environment. Ability to walk, sit, stand and climb. Ability to use hands to finger, grasp, or feel. Occasionally required to reach, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Ability to talk and hear. Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. General office hours plus participation in a crisis response duty rotation with frequent night and weekend obligations.
