The Manager of Quality & Lean Engineering is a worldwide management position responsible to eliminate waste, optimize and improve quality processes, and boost innovation across hardware and supplies manufacturing, globally. The Manager is expected to

  • Partner with manufacturing, engineering, systems, and supply chain leaders to enable alignment and achievement of standards, priorities and strategic key results.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain the measures, processes, and policies to assure assembled goods meet specification standards, customer expectations and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with various functional managers to lead the quality engineering and site quality support teams in pursuit of four major objectives.
    • One, provide outstanding customer service.
    • Two, ensure compliance to established global, customer, and internal standards.
    • Three, support and collaborate with manufacturing functional managers who are the “owners” of component, assembly and/or systems quality.
    • Four, intentional focus to utilize Lean manufacturing practices and principles to drive lasting, sustainable improvements.
  • Be a sought-after expert in standards compliance, auditing, and ongoing manufacturing improvement, the expert for customer and supplier assembled goods requirements, the expert for specific product and process requirements, and an expert in performing root cause problem solving and related activities.

This is both a strategic and hands-on position.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Day to day leadership of the quality engineering / quality and lean organization

  • Directs and prioritizes activities of Quality Engineers, Quality Technicians, Quality Auditors, Lean Engineers, Lean Specialists, and support staff.
  • Coordinates customer site activities including routine pro-active QE visits, on-site quality representative activities, and reactive QE visits to address issues / customer concerns.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and reports on internal and external audits / metrics / projects / improvement activities and issues.
  • Provides monitoring, oversight, and direction related to standards and procedure compliance.
  • Interfaces with manufacturing, engineering, and site associates to provide real time guidance related to complete goods or process quality.

Management of Team

  • Develops and administers Quality & Lean Engineer performance metrics that support achievement of department objectives for safety, quality, productivity, and delivery.
  • Communicates team member performance expectations clearly, monitors actual performance continually and provides performance feedback frequently.
  • Organizes and deploys the resources of the department to best meet the needs of manufacturing.
  • Ensures quality plans comply to relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Engages appropriate teams or suppliers on quality issues, including containment, problem solving and corrective actions. Performs on-going supplier performance assessment either directly or w/related responsible engineering team.
  • Collaborate with and influence production leaders across manufacturing sites to identify challenges and solutions; share best practices
  • Provides support when required during off hours relating to quality.

New Product Development

  • Reviews and ensures new product documents comply with Lexmark requirements, including but not limited to PFMEA, Process Flow/Control Plan, Quality Inspection Standards, First/Last Piece Instructions, Receiving Inspection Instructions, Dock Audit Instructions, complete goods audits.
  • Supports launch preparation activities, internal development trials, and internal product development milestone reviews.

Customer Product Quality Support

  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with external customers.
  • Engages immediately in reaction to high visibility customer quality concerns.
  • Travels as required supporting containment, investigation, and presentation of corrective actions (or disputes) for customer quality concerns.
  • Provides functional & technical knowledge and performs research in support of manufacturing operations in resolving quality concerns.
  • Supports continuous improvement activities that create improvements to standardized work methods and operational efficiency.

Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement (CI)

  • Facilitates and supports Practical Problem Solving (PPS) activities to fully define the problem, determine root cause, and develop and validate root cause based corrective actions to resolve customer, internal and supplier quality concerns.
  • Assures compliance to A3 or root cause standard, report out to senior leaders.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and establish quantifiable improvement targets.
  • Establish and manage CI system/process to achieve key results.
  • Lead quality or lean initiatives.
  • Develop and utilize quality processes/assessments to set performance improvement targets.
  • Validate identified best practices are shared and implemented globally.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Industrial Engineering field or related discipline is preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience in quality, manufacturing, assembly, continuous improvement or relevant engineering function
  • 3+ years experience in quality management preferred
  • Experience as Internal Auditor or Accountable for IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 certification is a plus
  • Lean Certification or 3+ years leadership in a Lean Manufacturing environment preferred

IDEAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with all levels of leaders and customer organizations, including influencing, driving change and, presenting problem solving results.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point
  • Knowledge of quality core tools including APQP, PPAP, MSA, GD&T, & FMEA.
  • Competence using Toyota’s Practical Problem Solving methodology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 Standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with specific customer quality response formats, including 8D, A3.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and Metrology tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of SPC & Statistical Analysis and related software skills (Minitab or similar).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires typically 15% planned travel.
