TITLE: Writing Center Professional

DEPARTMENT: Office of Global Strategies and International Affairs

REPORTS TO: Writing Center Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per week

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

The Writing Center Professional will provide guidance and expertise in the writing process for KSU students and faculty. Additionally, the employee will review drafts, provide constructive feedback, and help writers develop their ideas more effectively. This professional will work with writers on all levels, from beginning writers working on academic papers to graduates crafting dissertations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Consulting one-on-one with individual writers of all abilities on subjects across the curriculum;
  • Answering questions about writing, research, documentation, and resources;
  • Facilitating small group and classroom workshops covering topics including the writing process, writing strategies, and citation styles;
  • Creating Writing Center support materials;
  • Assisting with website maintenance;
  • Contributing to the Writing Center program development; and,
  • Staffing the reception desk, including answering the phone and responding to email.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of writing processes across disciplines
  • Familiarity with academic writing conventions and citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.)
  • Knowledge of research methods and sources
  • Awareness of common writing challenges for students at different levels
  • Understanding of inclusive and accessible teaching practices
  • Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogy for writing support
  • Familiarity with digital tools for writing, editing, and research
  • Awareness of confidentiality and ethical considerations in academic support

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback on writing
  • Active listening and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with writers
  • Facilitation skills for leading workshops and group discussions
  • Time management and ability to handle multiple consultations efficiently
  • Ability to create engaging support materials for writers
  • Technical skills for website maintenance and digital resource development
  • Organizational skills for managing appointments, emails, and administrative tasks

Abilities:

  • Adaptability to work with writers of varying skill levels and disciplines
  • Patience and empathy in working with students and faculty
  • Critical thinking to help writers develop ideas and arguments effectively
  • Collaboration with colleagues and faculty to improve writing support services
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in program development
  • Problem-solving skills to address challenges in writing and learning
  • Willingness to stay updated on best practices in writing instruction and pedagogy

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Supporting and mentoring student writing assistants;
  • Introducing the Writing Center to students by visiting classrooms and participating in KSU welcome and orientation events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English with two years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Master’s degree in English preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position requires sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods. The hours may vary Monday through Sunday (37.5 hours per week) with evenings and occasional weekend work as needed.
