REPORTS TO: Associate Professor in Aquaculture, directing the Floating Raceway Project

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will coordinate with the Research Associate (Floating Raceways) and other members of the team working on the Floating Raceway Project. This position will work in support of laboratory and field research, use and maintenance of facilities and equipment and fish culture practices. Duties include assisting in the construction of new floating raceways, operation and maintenance of floating raceway systems at the Benson Research and Demonstration farm and fish culture activities in ponds and hatchery facilities at the Aquaculture Research Center.
Occasional travel to sites installing floating raceways may be required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operation and maintenance of floating raceway systems.
- Assist other research staff by performing designated procedures.
- Maintain fish inventory and fish health.
- Assist with use and maintenance of equipment, hatchery facilities, ponds, and hatchery laboratory.
- Assist in constructing floating raceway systems.
- Assist with plumbing, and carpentry tasks.
- Conscientious husbandry of aquatic animals.
- Collect and record experimental data.
- Maintain records as required.
- Responsible use of KSU vehicles and equipment.
- Assist with purchasing equipment, materials, and supplies for the project.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team is required.
- Initiative, resourcefulness, punctuality, and ability to work independently are essential.
- Experience with methods of fish production.
- Ability to take an unbiased sample.
- Ability to accurately record data and enter into a worksheet for analysis.
- Knowledge of the scientific method.
- Ability to safely operate a light truck.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory and field equipment.
- Ability to perform routine administrative tasks.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Position will conduct other related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Agriculture, Biology, Environmental Science, Fisheries, or a closely related field.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Physical activity related to farming. Requires handling of bagged feed and farming supplies.
- Exposure to seasonal farming conditions such as extreme temperatures, dirt, water, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
