Role Summary:
The Chief of Staff for the Information Technology (IT), (AVP of Strategy Advancement) department plays a critical role in driving strategic initiatives and operational excellence within the IT organization. This position serves as a key advisor to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and is responsible for facilitating communication, ways of working, and the execution of strategic plans. The Chief of Staff will work closely with IT leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Provides end-to-end support to the CIO, including planning and execution, stakeholder and team engagement enablement; operational management of day-to-day; cadence for key meetings including IT leadership meetings, actions and follow-ups; performance management enablement of key outcomes and results for the IT organization; external, internal and partners key relations management and stewardship; budget management and tracking in partnership with finance; engage in team development and Voice of Associate plan to effect change. Key member of the IT Leadership team. Represents the CIO as needed.

Overall responsibilities:

Strategic Planning:

  • Assist the CIO, IT Leadership team in developing and executing IT strategies that align with the company's overall objectives, recent examples include Operating Model, Productivity, SDLC, etc.

  • Lead the planning and facilitate execution and tracking of key IT initiatives and projects.

  • Work closely with IT CIO and leadership team on the delivery framework for IT strategy & execution.

Operational Management:

  • Identify areas for improvement and implement best practices to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Orchestrate leadership operating cadence to ensure focus on critical issues to achieving outcomes while increasing productivity and driving an intense sense of urgency.

  • Assumes leadership of complex strategic initiatives that are broad in scope across the IT organization and potentially in partnership with business areas, from conceptualizing through implementation.

  • Leads IT Leadership Operating Cadence (meeting cadence, standups/huddles, onsite sessions, offsites, Townhalls, etc.) as well as executive-level reporting including Humana board and Technology Committee of the board presentations and updates.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Responsible for facilitating collaboration, ways of working, driving day to day action plans, alignment, outcomes and results tracking for the IT organization and execution of strategic plans

  • Facilitate communication within IT and between IT and business units. Includes setting up and facilitating team cadences, communication channels, and as-needed work sessions with IT leadership and key stakeholders, on behalf of the CIO.

  • Serve as a liaison between IT leadership and internal/external stakeholders.

Performance Metrics:

  • Works with IT CIO and IT Leadership to execute periodic process for Monthly, Annual, and Quarterly performance measurement approach.

  • Actively engages IT Leadership Team in strategy development and execution to achieve 100% of IT defined outcomes.

  • Trusted advisor to the CIO to ensure connectivity between IT Strategy and IT Operations

  • Prepare reports and presentations for the CIO and other stakeholders.

Team Development:

  • Assumes a leadership position in promoting team health, particularly with IT Leadership Team; but also, key contributor to initiatives that strengthen the culture and improves the associate experience within IT organization in partnership with key aligned partners including HR.

  • Support talent development and organizational culture initiatives within the IT department.

  • Works closely with the CIO and aligned HR Partner to create a framework and approach to active workforce management and people focused culture.

  • Mentor and guide junior staff in initiatives.

Budget Management:

  • Assist in the preparation and management of the IT budget, working in partnership with IT CFO to ensure the expectations and reporting needs for the CIO are cared for.

  • Monitor expenditures and ensure alignment with financial goals.

  • Work closely with IT CIO and aligned IT Finance CIO to ensure fiscal ways of working, platforms, reporting, and tools are consistent across IT and as linked to the enterprise.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT or related field and Masters Business Administration (or equivalent experience).

  • 10+ years experience in IT management, project management, or operations.

  • 10+ years advising executives, leading & influence management teammates.

  • Motivated self-starter; excited to work with cross-functional team members to execute against an end-to-end program scope.

  • Strategic mindset with critical thinking skills to connect disparate dots and overcome ambiguity. Ability to evaluate and solve problems with rigorous logic that pushes beyond the obvious to uncover root cause issues and creative solutions.

  • Adept at forming strong relationships with diverse teams and personalities through effective trust building and collaboration. Strength in persuading multiple parties to align around one vision and exudes the confident to drive execution and adoption.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written (including reporting and presentations) with demonstrated ability to use language that is succinct and clear.

  • Must be available and manage continuous engagement and expectation setting with the CIO.

  • Experience leading large projects and programs from the conceptualizing through implementation. Comfort managing multiple initiatives at one time and prioritizing efforts that deliver the greatest impact, all while leveraging standard methodologies, tools, and platforms. Experience driving large scale change initiatives.

  • Track record of meeting deadlines and focusing on deliverables.

  • Must be exceptionally organized and able to manage across multiple initiatives at any one time.

  • Ability to use data to establish quantifiable success criteria and measure progress toward targeted results.

Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


$184,800 - $254,100 per year


This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
