Humana’s Behavioral Economics Team is seeking a Research Scientist (Remote) to support our work developing measurement strategies across the enterprise. Our team enables business partners to improve outcomes and lower costs for millions of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, using strategic and rigorous test & learn approaches to answer high-priority business questions.

Location: remote

In this multi-disciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to build your skill set in applied research, exploring a range of questions across clinical, operational, and member experience workstreams.

Study design support

· Conduct exploratory analyses on populations, trends, and clinical conditions

· Collect study design inputs, e.g. eligible population definition, engagement funnel, and baseline statistics

· Collaborate with test designers to support program evaluation using randomized controlled trials, propensity matching, difference-in-difference models, or other experimental/quasi-experimental methods.

o Coordinate with partner data science team to ensure data transfers are timely and accurate.

o Translate measurement/ study design needs to primary and secondary metrics

· Conduct literature reviews and intervention research to generate evidence-based view on appropriate assumptions underlying our test designs

Analytics & coding

· Identify, extract and prepare datasets using SAS/ SQL with ongoing curation/ modifications as needed

· Apply analytical expertise to create variables/features, design visuals and charts, and evaluate operational, claims and user behavior data using statistical languages (Python, R, or SAS)

· Develop models and/or rules using claims data, membership data, or other data sources to inform measurement strategy

Knowledge management and team learning

· Document up-to-date measurement approaches, including best practices for analyzing claims data (e.g., best practices for medication adherence measurement.)

o Coordinate with partners to record current Humana measurement practices.

o Summarize the latest literature on best practices in measurement.

o Present best practices at team meetings.

· Manage a code repository (emphasis on SAS) with codebooks from BE projects.

· Peer-review code for BE and Clinical Analytics teammates

Other

· Collaborate effectively with data teams, analytic teams, finance teams, product owners, clinicians, informaticists, leaders, and other business partners

· Manage and prioritize your work so that you deliver quality analysis in a timely manner and communicate clear expectations with business partners.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree

  • 2+ years of experience with data querying and statistical analysis languages specific to SQL, SAS, and/or R/Python

  • Skills to create datasets and analytical variables from large and complex data environments by writing code in SQL, SAS, and R/Python

  • Familiarity with hypothesis testing, statistical methods, and/or comparative effectiveness study design and modeling techniques

  • Strong interest in healthcare and desire to make a positive impact on health outcomes.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, to deliver quality analytical work, and communicate results and insights clearly to business partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a quantitative discipline such as Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Economics, Statistics, Clinical Informatics, Public Health and/or related fields

  • Healthcare or managed care working experience

  • Applying research methods to transform high volumes of complex data into actionable insights.

  • Experience working with medical, pharmacy, and lab claims

  • Experience conducting simulations to inform power calculations or other aspects of measurement strategy

  • Demonstrated familiarity with clinical concepts related to a broad range of clinical conditions and disease states – experience with oncology, behavioral health and chronic conditions would be particularly valuable

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


$69,800 - $96,200 per year


This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
