Overview
To function responsibly as a scrubbed member of the surgical team in anticipating the needs of the surgeon, passing sterile instruments, and maintaining standards of care in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of ARH and the Department of Surgery.
Responsibilities
Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/
Surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical
Procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that
Equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted
Under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists
Must possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic
Technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical
Procedures and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a
Physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Surgical technologists are individuals with specialized education who function
As members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.
The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies
And equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
He/she has an understanding of the procedure being
Performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure
And is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile
Field.
Qualifications
TECHNICAL
1. Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Surgical technologists must be a graduate from accredited surgical technology programs (CST) and obtain accreditation with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
3. Current BLS Certification.
4. Minimum of 1 year work experience in the operating room.
5. Able to communication effectively in English, both verbally and written.
6. Basic computer knowledge.
7. CST’s maintain their certification by earning 60 hours of approved continuing education in a four-year period or by successfully retaking the certifying examination at the conclusion of the four-year period.
8. Has satisfactory attendance at inservice and staff development programs.
9. Other Duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Must be able to read and write.
2. Must be able to push, pull, lift 100 lbs plus with assistance.
3. Must be able to stand on feet for 10 hours per 12 hour shift.
4. Must be able to bend, squat, and stoop.
5. Must be dependable.
6. Must have no hearing or visual deficits with corrective apparel in use.
7. Must attend mandatory meetings (staff meetings, patient care inservices).
8. Must attend mandatory inservices (fire, safety, hazard, infection control, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, and CPR).
