Overview

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for performing technical supportive assistance within the pharmacy and assists in the outpatient and inpatient drug distribution system, the preparation of sterile products, drug therapy related research, including the supply function involved with scheduled II drugs and tax free alcohol.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief Pharmacist or his/her designee, performs the following duties.

Types all of the following as required: letters, memos, reports, forms, requisitions, bills, prescription labels and product labels.

Performs routine office duties such as answers telephone, take messages, distributes mail, operates office machines such as typewriter, CRT, adding machine, copying machine and microfiche.

Maintains and retrieves departmental files such as correspondence, licenses, indexing mechanism for locating drugs, new products and drug information, drug information requests, prescriptions, profile cards, cash receipts and records of issuance for exempt narcotics, syringes, needles, etc.

Performs distribution and billing functions in the unit dose drug system and the outpatient pharmacy in an accurate, prompt and efficient manner.

Position Description

Maintains a sufficient inventory of supplies and pharmaceuticals by conducting inventories, order and receive goods, maintaining records of status of orders and keeps abreast of information concerning addition and deletions of products.

Stocks drugs on shelves or in storage area and rotates stock to prevent having expired drugs on hand and maintains a record of expiration dates of drugs.

Maintains comprehensive drug references including current drug formulary noting the additions and deletions.

Receives and files sterile product order and prepares, evaluates, labels, and issues same.

Pulls and updates patient profile for pharmacist review.

Prepackages and labels products for later use.

Assist with the inpatient drug distribution system by picking up orders from nursing station, transcribing orders onto the inpatient profile, filling requisitions, filling unit dose cart, prepackaging drugs and delivering drugs to nursing stations.

Stocks the pharmacy with the required bottles, vials, and other necessities.

Assists in the general maintenance and neatness of the pharmacy maintaining an aseptic work environment.

Enters patient profile data into terminal or locates and visually verifies patient profile.

Enters new prescription data into terminal.

Enters information on new physicians into terminal (Example: Physician I.D.)

Checks and verifies file maintenance (changes).

Enters file maintenance data from information received from refills, returned packages, telephone calls, cards and letters.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Prepares prescriptions for mailing.

May assist in drug-therapy related research.

POSITION PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess physical abilities to endure prolonged standing, excessive walking, sitting, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Six (6) months to one (1) year on-the-job training is required to attain proficiency of performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Successful completion of the ARH Pharmacy Technician Program or equivalent program.

Type a minimum of 30 words per minute accurately.

Possess a good working knowledge of the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation.

No history of alcoholism, drug addiction or indiscriminate use of habit ­forming or dangerous drugs.

No felony/criminal record.

NOTE: If a qualified candidate is not available, successful candidate will be placed in the Pharmacy Attendant position and must successfully complete the ARH Pharmacy Technician training program within one year.
