The Registered Nurse (RN) Oncology is an advanced RN with in–depth knowledge and understanding of the complex physiological and psychosocial dimensions of cancer care for the client and family in the community setting. The functional components of the CNS role include that of clinician, educator and consultant.

Provides patient care from the perspective of process, structure and outcomes.

Serves as a role model in nursing practice by providing direct care to selected patients.

Cooperates in the daily operations of oncology office.

Identifies and meets immediate and long-range nursing care needs of patients and their families.

Integrates knowledge of cancer detection and prevention into clinical practice.

Serves as a consultant or resource person to team members, the patient and the patient’s family in assessing strategies to maximize adaptation to illness and promote wellness.

Demonstrates proper technique and advanced knowledge in the administration of Chemotherapy Medications and blood

products. As well as venipuncture, bone marrow aspirations and patient assessment/intake.

Assists in the development of agency nursing policies and procedures specific to oncology as needed.

Minimum Education

• Graduation from an accredited registered nursing program. Chemo certification desired but not required.

Minimum Work Experience

• Minimum of three to five years in oncology specialty preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications

• Current state licensure to practice as a registered nurse.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Knowledge and proper technique of chemotherapy medication and blood products.
